Vegas Trip Recap Day 3 of 3

Being the last day of my mini vacation, I didn't know how the day was going to go.  I had already gotten quite drunk 2 days in a row, and I wasn't sure if I was going to go for a third and final drunken day.

Again we had no hard plans for the day.  The only thing I had to do was to make sure to pack all my stuff for my SUPER early 6am flight Monday morning.

We decided that today was going to be the day that we just walk the strip and go where ever the wind took us.  This ended up being a really fun time.  I found it odd that thus far, I hadn't drank an alcoholic beverage out of a normal shaped glass.  Everything comes in a football, a yard, guitar.....pretty much any shape you can think of.  My down fall?  The frozen vodka/pink lemonade drinks in the funny shaped cups.  They are so delicious!

We found ourselves at a 1 deck blackjack table that was seriously on fire.  We played for a couple hours and we all doubled if not tripled our money.  From there we just bounced around, gambling, refilling our obnoxious cups and finally ended up at our hotel's 2 dollar taco place.  I was really really really said that I had to leave Vegas in a few hours.

Vegas Trip Recap Day 2 of 3

Thankfully there is nothing on schedule for today.  Yesterday was a bit much with all our time restraints.  Going to Crossfit Las Vegas was a HUGE accomplishment, but it wasn't cheap either.  The cab ride alone with 25 dollars, the was a drop in fee, and of course I bought a shirt.  Luckily one of the members there was nice enough to bring us back to the hotel to save us the cab fare.

One of my favorite places in Vegas is Fremont street or Old Vegas.  It doesn't have the HUGE hotels and fancy restaurants like the strip.  It's more of the classic casinos, the famous neon cowboy sign, and it has a huge electric arch down the street that plays a light show.  My favorite thing about Fremont street? They sell delicious slushy alcoholic beverages in full sized footballs.

Once I had my drink in hand, I was good to go.  We hung around, played some blackjack and then decided to head back to the hotel.

We found the rest of our friends at the 2 dollar taco restaurant (somehow every night we all always ended up at this place) and continued to drink, dance, and gamble into the night.

Vegas Trip Recap Day 1 of 3

After having my mind set on going to Crossfit in LV for so long, I was really surprised not really wanting to go on Friday.  I knew that if I didn't go today I wouldn't go at all, so Dennis and I hailed a cab and $25 dollars later we were there!

Once there, I felt really good about my decision.  We were very early for the 10am class so I decided to get some rowing in for my 100,000 meter challenge.  After about 15 minutes it was time to start the WOD.

I'm not sure what I was expecting but the warm up kicked my ass.  We had to grab 14lbs (for the girls) medicine balls and run around the building.  Then we had to do 10 kipping swings, followed by 5 burppes and then that whole circut three times.  I'm already winded!

After that we did 4 sets of 3 reverse pull ups.  That means that at the top of your pull up you bring yourself down as sllllllllowly as possible.

Then it was time for the WOD.

8 Rounds of 2 Minutes to complete:

5 Shoulder Press
4 Push Press
3 Jerks

I completed all 8 rounds using 35lbs.

After we were done with CF, we had some free time until we had to rent a car to get to our photo shoot.  So we relaxed by the pool, gambled, and ate some food.  Nothing too overly exciting, but we wanted to keep it low key until after the pictures.

Then at about 4pm we went to rent a car.  The guy at the desk says these magical words "we only  have one car left."  Dennis and I had no other choice so we rented:

Bumble Bee!
From 5:15 to 7:15 we drove around the Freemont/Vegas area and took really cool/creative photos.  I cannot wait until we get the pictures back!!!

Once back from photos, it was time to go to The Gallery nightclub in Planet Hollywood to celebrate Dennis' 30th birthday.  The club was really cool and being in the VIP section made it all the more enjoyable.

Wanna hear something crazy?  So in complete Vegas style, there were random girls that work at the club dressed in black panies and bras wearing masks dancing through out the club.  All of them of course very attractive and super toned.  They would dance alone or together, being super sexy, and then one of them actually did a handstand and did all sorts of leg movements while upside down.  I was completely obssessed with these girls and I kept wondering to myself.....do they do crossfit?

With two minutes left of Dennis being 29....I was very nicely drunk and having a blast drinking and dancing!

Happy Birthday Dennis!

1 Day to Vegas: Looooong Travel Day

Before I get ahead of myself, I knew that I should get a WOD in, or at least a row before I sat on a plane for 4 hours later today.

Dennis was leaving for Vegas at about 3am so it was up to me to make sure to get to crossfit early.  Which I did!

I decided to just row since I probably wouldn't get a chance to do any if at all while away.  So before most of you were even awake, I got in a decent row.  I would have done more, but the WOD required a rower and I didn't want to get in anybody's way.

The rest of the day pretty much flew by and I was on my way!

2 Days to Vegas: Bad Diet

Last full day in PA before my trip to Vegas!

I've been eating like crap for multiple reasons.

1. I haven't been grocery shopping for at least a week, so I have no fresh foods.

Ok so I guess there is only one main reason why I haven't been eating well this week.  My saving grace here is that I've been doing the WODs 4-5 times a week and the ADDING at least a 3k row, which burns a ton of calories.  I'm not trying to justify the crap I've been putting into my body, but it def makes me sleep better at night.

Starting October first I am going back to hard core Paleo and I will have to up my rowing meters for sure.

3 Days to Vegas: The First Rule of Crossfit...

So one of my favorite movies is Fight Club.  It started out with a harmless crush on Edward Norton and then as I watched the movie over and over again, it became one of my most favorite movies to quote (Jaws being my 2nd favorite quotable movie).

Today made me think of a Fight Club quote:

Narrator: "So many people moving the house moved."

This quote was towards the end of the movie when Project Mayhem was growing rapidly and he had everybody preparing for the plan.  How on earth does this relate to Crossfit?

After I was done with my WOD (and some extra credit rowing) I stayed and watched some of the 6pm class.  The class wasn't abnormally packed, but it just felt like so many people were moving, and working hard, it felt like the whole place was moving and almost alive.

There were people doing their clean squats, jumping rope, rowing, kettlebell swings, ring push ups....just a lot of activity.

Today's WOD destroyed my arms, which made my pre and post rowing tourchous!  I know I have to keep at it to make it to 100,000 by October 15th.

4 Days to Vegas: Challenge Remorse

Have you ever made a major purchase and then immediately regretted it?

Have you ever gotten a tattoo and then said to yourself, why'd I do that?

Have you ever said "I Do" and then wake up to your new husband violently puking in the hotel toilet after he promised not to get "bombed" on your wedding day?

If you have (Karen = 3 out of 3), then you have experienced remorse!

It hasn't been 5 days of the 100,000 meter challenge yet and I am already feeling remorse.  It's really hard to row at least 3,333.33 meters per day, everyday for 15 days.

I started off pretty strong, but missed Saturday and only got a small row in on Sunday.  In order to just make up for lost days, I had to row 7,000 meters today.  GOOD THING IT WAS MY REST DAY.  The row took just under 35 minutes and I felt like I was going to puke.  And I had to do all that just to keep up!  With Vegas coming up so soon, I have no idea how I'm going to make it to my 100,000 meter goal by October 15th.

In other news, Dennis asked me if I had signed up for Festivous 2, which I hadn't and when I looked up the event it was alreay sold out.  Oh well, one less thing for me to get stressed about.

5 Days to Vegas: Crossfit Aspire!

I'm not quite sure how I made it to Crossfit today considering these factors:

1. Yesterday I got up at 5am to be at Crossfit610 to carpool down to Philly.
2. Once in Philly, I did the FGB and got 206 reps.
3. After FGB, I went to a baby shower.
4. After the Baby Shower, drove down to Palmyra NJ to sleep over my friends house.
5. Didn't get to sleep until well after midnight.

But low and behold here I am at Crossfit Aspire in Cherry Hill.

I do REALLY like visiting different boxes to see how they differ from Crossfit610...and of course I added to my ever growing Crossfit Wardrobe:

7 Days to Vegas: TGIF!!

I am so happy that today is Friday!  Less than a week from today, I will be across the country celebrating my husband's 30th.  But before I get ahead of myself, I have to keep true to my Crossfitting this week.

Pic from "Buddy Bar" WOD

Today I was able to "sneak" out of the office early so caught the 4:15pm class.  This at the least gives me more time between today's WOD and tomorrow's Fight Gone Bad 6 in Philly tomorrow morning.

8 Days to Vegas: ALL OUT!

Dennis and I FINALLY made it to an 6am class this week!

I don't know what came over me but I took today's WOD super serious.  (Maybe guilt from all the garbage I've been eating over the last two weeks?).  In anycase, the WOD was 5 rounds of 10 dead lifts, then a 200 meter run.  Two things helped me today with my fast time:

1. I didn't drop my weight between reps.  I personally think dropping weights between reps waist a ton of time and a ton more energy.  ESPN2 was broadcasting the Crossfit Games last night and I couldn't get over how often the competitors would drop their weight.  I mean I get it if you need a break and shake out your arms, but jeeeze!  I feel like so much more energy is used getting back into position after dropping a weight, so I told myself not to do it, and I didn't.

2. I didn't walk at all during the run.  Trust me I wanted to.  But walking loses a ton of time.  I don't know if I was trying to keep up with Courtney and Dennis, but in the moment my goal was to stay with them.  They would run faster than me, but they would drop their weights, which is when I would catch up.  hahahaha am I strategizing?

I really like dead lifting, no clue why, but I just really like it.  I almost beat Dennis in the WOD but at the very last minute he came sprinting ahead of me to keep his man card intact.  :)

I came back to Crossfit610 at 7pm to start my row challenge.  5,000k in the bucket with 95,000 left to go!

9 Days to Vegas: Single Digits to VEGAS!

As the countdown to Vegas dwindles, I have realized a few things.  I have lost sight of many of my goals that I have set since the Best Shape of Your Life Challenge has ended.

1. Be in the 140s for Vegas.  I haven't weighed myself in weeks and to be honest I have been true to going to Crossfit at least 3 if not more days per week but I haven't been eating well at all.  I have been following the basic guidelines, but I have been cheating quite a bit (which could explain the funk I've been in for the past week or two).  I think I am going to wait to weigh myself the day of my flight.

2. Moving up in weights.  I have 100% noticed my strength increasing.  I am not doing too many WODS prescribed, but I am slowly but surely moving up.  I have been trying to keep track of my weights in the tab labeled weight stats but I know I have to be more diligent with recording them.

3. Abs....LOL..well this one is going to hold off.  I still have a good amount of pudge going on in my stomach area and it seems to be holding on for dear life.  However, when I move certain ways, with a certain light I swear I can see some lines forming.  (Just play along so I feel better).

I have already decided that after Vegas I am going back to strict paleo eating.  It always amazes me how you can diet alone, you can workout alone, but you wont get real results unless you pair the two together.  Its hard enough doing one never mind two, but I have to remember how awesome I felt when I did both and how my body changed so drastically.

I have also decided to reinstate the before and after photos after Vegas.  They were a HUGE motivation tool and they helped me stay on track.

10 Days to Vegas: A New Challenge

I honestly cannot tell you who is worse between myself and Dennis.  We get so excited and involved with challenges, events, races, and anything else that requires some type of commitment and a free T-shirt.

I try not to do too many challenges because I know that they cause me a ton of anxiety and I put a huge amount of pressure on myself to do well.  (Not to mention some are just out right expensive).

But low and behold, with the 8 week Biggest Loser Competition done (2nd place), the Best Shape of Your Life Competition done (Dennis and I both winning 1st place in separate categories), we decided to enter the 100,000 meter in a Month Challenge.  I added a link to the flyer on the side of my page.

Why was I drawn to this challenge?

1. I hate rowing.  I've hated it since day one when Trainer Mike put me on it back in April for the Biggest Loser Challenge.  It's comparable to a treadmill.  It sucks and it's boring.

2. It's a challenge, not a race.  You simply have 1 month to get in 100,000 meters.  BOOYA.  Thats it.

3. It's free.  Not a huge factor here, but it's nice to not have to fork over more money to participate in an event.

So there ya have it.  Starting September 15th, I have to log 100,000 meters on the good ol' rower.  After signing up I did the math and the numbers are staggering (ugh that is one of my least favorite business expressions).

100,000 meters in 30 Days = 3,334 meteres per Day.

If you (and by you I mean me) miss a day you have to make up those lost meters.  So now this becomes a time management challenge as well as the obvious physical part.

Today is a rest day, I have gone to CF 3 days in a row (including the brutal 9/11 WOD) and I need a rest.

11 Days to Vegas: Horrible Day!

Today was a horrible day!  Last night I was super sore from the 9/11 workout and I just knew I wasn't going to be able to get up for the 6am class.

No biggie, I'll just catch one of the pm classes.

Dennis leaves for work about 30 minutes before me which is totally fine, except when MY car keys are in his glove compartment.  UGH.  I frantically call Dennis' cell to see if he would be kind enough to turn around and bring back my keys, but low and behold, his phone is dead and he doesn't answer.

I think to myself and say, well I can always work from home today right?  WRONG. Dennis had brought our laptop to a football draft and then went straight to a bachelor party.  When they all got home from drinking Dennis decided to use the laptop to charge his phone.  WHILE he was doing this, one of our good friends (ART) stumbled, fell, and landed right on the laptop breaking the screen.  So at the moment I don't have a computer.

UGH.  OK who at work drives by me that can pick me up.  NOBODY ughhhhh.  So I sheepishly call my co-worker Evan who graciously comes and picks me up.

Once I'm at work, I have to figure out how to get home.  Dennis agrees to pick me up and then both of us can go to the 5pm class.  That would have been awesome except traffic was bad and we were too late.  Luckily we ran some errands in the meantime and attended the 7pm class.

I hope the rest of the week does not continue like today!

12 Days to Vegas: 9/11 Throwdown

Today was the 9/11 Throwdown Event and it was a major success thanks to everybody who participated and of course to Trainer Molly.  She did an excellent time running the heats and making sure things ran smoothly.

The event was a WOD specifically to honor those who risked and lost their lives on 9/11.  And no surprise it was a very challenging WOD:

13 Days to Vegas: Bar Buddy

NOTHING was stopping me from going to today's WOD.  I need a good ass whipping and I needed it asap.

So since I've been crossfitting I have gotten 3 people to join and 6 people to try out a class.  I am pretty proud of this!  And statistically speaking that is a pretty good join rate.  I am still working on a few more people to try a class and I really hope they do!

In any case, Dennis and I made it to the Saturday WOD no problem.  I was really happy to see my friend Windy (one of the girls I got to join).  She is a crossfit inspiration.  She just joined about a month ago and she is trying to shed some post baby weight.  She just had a baby in March and she is using crossfit as her weight loss tool.  I am so happy that she has embraced crossfit and today we had the pleasure of being work out partners.

The WOD was harder than usual (which is typical for a Saturday) but Windy and I (and everybody else for that matter) did a really great job.

After the WOD Dennis and I headed down to to Washington Crossing to see two of our friends get married.  I used this opportunity to test drive one of my Vegas dresses and can I just say that I felt amazing in the dress.  I've never been so proud to be wearing a strapless dress.  On the way down to the wedding I texted Windy:

Karen:  Decided to wear a strapless dress to show off the muscles/toned shoulders.  Hope I don't intimidate anybody. Hahahahaha

Windy:  Haha! Nice :) I was just telling Matt that I would not have survived this morning w/o you!!  Hope you guys have a great time.

The wedding was beautiful and Dennis and I very much enjoyed ourselves!

WOD:

20 + 20 Front Squat
20+ 20 Hang Power Clean
20+20 Push Jerk

Done with a partner.  Partner 1 Does 20 Front Squats as Partner 2 rests.  Then Switch (Bar must never touch the ground or rack)  Each do hang cleans then once partner 1 finished 30 push Jerks, pass the bar to partner 2 and they begin their 200 single ropes.  Once finished partner 1 starts next round of front squats as partner 2 finishes their 200 single ropes...

14 Days to Vegas: Slacking

For whatever reason I cannot get into the swing of things this week.  I tried AGAIN to get up for the 6am class but couldn't.

I should have brought workout clothes to work to go to the gym after....I didn't.

And the last straw....when I was released from work today at 3pm I should have gone home, gotten clothes and made the 415 or 5pm class....I didn't.

What did I do?

I went home sat in my room and felt sorry for myself.  I eventually fell asleep and woke up at 6pm.  Too late to do any WODs.  I have been so off this entire week and I really hope that this is the end of it.

It's amazing how much time I've wasted saying, I'll do better tomorrow.  Before I know it an entire week has past me by and I have accomplished nothing.  I am getting really frustrated and upset with myself.

15 Days to Vegas: Weirdness

First off, I'd like to apologize for not keeping up with my blogging.  I try to do them on a daily basis, but since Labor Day it's been hectic and I've let it slip.  Second, I'd like to apologize for not posting cool pictures with my posts.  I know those are the highlight of the blogs and I've been slacking for sure.  I'm trying to get caught up and soon things shall be back to normal!

It's amazing how I can go weeks feeling amazing and then all of a sudden it can seem like nothing is going right.

I started getting these bad sore throats at night, sometimes causing me to wake up and stay up for hours.  They would last until the morning and by noon I would be fine.  At first I thought it was strep, but one doctor's visit later I have been told that I have allergies!  Nothing that taking a pill a night can't fix. Fine.  Since sleep has been an issue, I will go to the later class.

Work has been really stressful.  I work for a small company and there have been talks of lay offs.  My coworkers are my friends and having to let people go is very difficult.  As Human Resources I have to play a huge roll of these lay offs and they just plain out suck.  Typically I can get out of work to make Crossfit on time, but today it is just not happening.  So today will be a rest day.

As most of you have  noticed, my countdown to Vegas is dwindling and well typical Karen is being afraid of success.  For the last two weeks I haven't been eating very well and having that long weekend without going to crossfit per say is giving me the complex of failure.  Physically I am doing fine, but mentally I feel like a train wreck.  How do I get myself out of this funk?!?

Today was a HUGE milestone for me as a novice Crossfitter.  One of my strength movements is now in the triple digits!  I am so proud of myself and I am getting closer to doing more and more of the movements prescribed rather than scaled!!!

Again Dennis and I just could not wake up for the 6am class, so we both attended the 5pm class.

17 Days to Vegas: This is Going to Suck

Nothing gives me more Crossfit anxiety than going to a WOD after not going to a WOD for a few days.  Lesson:  Always go to Crossfit!!

Back during the Biggest Loser days I think I missed two consecutive days and when I came back, Trainer Mike greeted me by saying "Karen, I feel like I haven't seen you since 1985."  (BTW I was 2 in 1985).  So what this said to me was that Trainer Mike and Molly KNOW when you've missed a few days and aren't afraid to make you feel bad about it.

Dennis and I got to bed super early last night....as in like 6pm early...but we both we unable to get up for the 6am class.  Sighhh.

EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY at the 5pm class was dreading the 100 Burpees split into 5 rounds.  They are seriously the most dreaded movement.

Instead of doing endurence today, I participated in the group strength where we had to find our max Squat Cleans (7 in under 45 seconds).  It was kinda fun, but as always pretty challenging.

18 Days to Vegas: Happy Labor Day

Knowing that we had a VERY long drive home pack to PA, the girls and I decided it would be best to wake up some what early and just head home.

We left Cape Cod at about 8:30am and got to Allentown, PA at 3pm.  Such a long car ride.  The thing about long car rides is they waste the entire day and for some reason it sucks the life out of me.  Even though I hadn't been moving for 6+ hours, I felt like I could sleep for the rest of the day.

I feel like I haven't been to Crossfit610 for months and I am excited to get back into the swing of things tomorrow!

19 Days to Vegas: Labor Day 5k

Before crossfit, I tried to be a runner.  I thought that if I was a runner I would have, well, a runner's body.  The problem?  I HATE RUNNING!

I've always wanted to complete a half marathon and/or a full marathon, but the longest race I've done was the 10 Mile Broad Street run and it was quite torturous.  I know a half marathon is just a couple more miles, but I was not a happy camper at mile 10.

Despite all those negative feelings I knew there was a Labor Day 5k this morning and I thought I would give it a shot.  I hadn't done a 5k in forever and I was curious how my Crossfit training would cross over to running.  Keeping in mind that we don't focus on distance running, but there are some WOD's with running in them.

So the morning of I was at the start line of the race.  The hill was exceptionally hilly and twice I had to take a brief break to walk.

I got to the end and to my delight, I finished at 28:48, a new personal best.

I was REALLY excited.  I've never finished a 5k under 30 minutes even with training.  And  the other really awesome thing was that I didn't feel SUPER exhausted during the run.  Yes I had to walk twice, but those were me recovering from two of the bigger hills.  I was so proud of myself I was almost in tears.

And since that happend, I  now regret not signing up for the Philly Half and other races that I would have liked to do!

20 Days to Vegas: Home WOD

The last few weeks I have been on a "cleaning out" kick.  Since I have been losing weight and inches for the last few months and since Dennis and I have moved our bedroom upstairs, I have been wearing clothes and then deciding on whether to keep or heap them!  It's kinda fun.  So far I have collected 3 trash bags full of clothes that either don't fit (whether too big or too small) or that I just don't like anymore.

Since this has been on my mind, going to Cape Cod was a great way to try out old bathing suits that I have collected over the years.  I bought two new ones last year for my Honeymoon which I will keep for now, but I had some other ones from earlier on that I hadn't worn in a while but kept.  So day 2 at the beach I wore one that was from years and year ago, fit perfectly, but the elastics on the bottom were completely shot.  DARN IT!!

21 Days to Vegas: Beach WOD

Since I was without a Crossfit box for the whole long weekend, I knew I had to do something while away.

Fortunately, I packed my trusty jump rope and my new CROSSFIT JOURNAL that I won on Facebook from JournalMENU.com.  In the journal it provided me with several travel WODS to do while away from the box.  I had also recently downloaded a TABATA app on my phone (free of charge) for such instances.

So along with my sun glasses and sun block, I grabbed my journal and my phone and headed to the beach.

While my three friend went for a leisurely walk, myself and Jackie decided on doing the Travel TABATA WOD.

I must admit that when we first started, I was really embarrassed.  I could tell people were staring and after the first set, I just focused on my  movements and getting the reps in.  After we were done, I was covered in sand but felt really happy about getting in the WOD.

After a couple hours on the beach we decided to do some day time drinking on the beach.

6:00am - Start WOD

7:00am - Head to Work

8:00am - Start Work

5:00pm - Leave Work

6:00pm - Leave PA

Drive through PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA

2:00am - Arrive in Dennis, MA and FINALLY get to bed.

Amazingly enough, I was able to stay up the entire 21 hours, even when 8 hours of it were in a car.

This Labor Day Weekend we are taking our annual girls trip up to Cape Cod to visit our friend Sarah who's parents have a vacation house there.  The drive is exceptionally long, but worth every mile.

I have to laugh that the town name is Dennis, since obviously that is the name of my husband, so no matter how much I TRY not to think about him while on vacation, all the "Dennis" signs are always in my face.

I am glad that I got a WOD in this morning since I know I won't be going to any Crossfit boxes until at least Tuesday.  It is up to me over vacation to do travel WODS.
